The Fourth of July, or better said: Independence Day, always gets me in the mood to read some history. Last summer, I did a series on the New England Primer. This summer I read the biography of John Adams. Then I found some “Orations” for Independence Day celebrations. I can’t help but turn these into lessons. As it is, I am working on some civics lessons for older elementary. I think we might be recreating a celebration at Braintree or even a Philadelphia deliberation in a 4 year old classroom. We might be pasting cockades on hats in the tods and twos. We might be singing “Yankee Doodle Dandy” in the three. What are you doing? What is your class reading this summer?
